What is Free Scanner Software

A Windows scanner program that will work with practically any Windows-compatible scanner.

If you have a scanner—physical or virtual—and need a means to access it, Free Scanner Software is an excellent an option. As the straight-to-the-point name suggest, this program for Windows is completely free to use as much and as often as you like. There is no paid option, and it is not ad-supported.

This program is easier to use than a lot of the scanning software packaged in with scanners. You can use it as an alternative or because you no longer have access to the original software for whatever reason. It works with practically all equipment, and even if you do not have access to the appropriate drivers, generic Windows drivers will usually do the trick and provide access to basic scanning features.

The simple and streamlined approach is felt throughout the program. Big buttons at the top of the app provide users access to the features they will likely use most often. If you have just one scanner, the program will be ready to go automatically. If you have multiple scanners or want to access a network scanner, it supports actions like that as well.

The main window has two sections. On the left is a thumbnail pane. This provides a snapshot view of the scanned image as well as lets you navigate through the scans you have captured. On the right is a viewing window pane, which provides a detailed view of the document. Click a thumbnail to have that image become the focal point of the viewing window.

Scanning takes but a single button press for most tasks. You can also configure the scanning settings on a per document basis. Better yet, Free Scanner Software lets you save these settings as profiles so that you can recall them or swap back and forth between them with ease. There are even some light editing features provided, such as the option to rotate images.

As with most scanning software, scans are saved to the PNG file format by default. No other image file formats are supported unfortunately. Additionally, the program only supports the most common paper sizes for whatever reason. It does, however, support PDF creation, which is a button press as well. Turn one scan into a PDF or add dozens of images and even use the thumbnail window to order them.

Beyond some minor limitations, the biggest issue with Free Scanner Software is that it lacks integrated help of any kind. This should not be an issue for most users. Nevertheless, if you do run into a problem or cannot figure something, the help you need is going to be a little hard to come by.
